Streaming didn’t pay and CD sales were taking a nosedive. When I began putting out records on my own label, the record industry had just witnessed Napster. Fay, Nancy Kerrigan, and John Bobbitt, which were all the subjects of the song and of the headlines in the 90s. What was it like starting your own record label (Deep Fried Records), and do you feel it was liberating for you? I imagine from an artistic standpoint, it must be freeing, but financially I’m guessing it can be a challenge. Each song comes from its own musical universe but everything still manages to cohere together. So, for example, as you noticed, we put “Jingle Bells” into a minor key, making it sound almost Russian in flavor. We wanted to make a Christmas record that was a total retake on the original versions. I have always been a fan of 19th-century Christmas music. It is a parody of the Crash Test Dummies s alternative. Was this intentional? What inspired the album, and what was your goal with it? Next single Amish Paradise (1996)Headline News is a parody song by Weird Al Yankovic. 'Weird Al' Yankovich is performing mostly original songs. Although, I can’t help but feel like “Jingle Bells” sounds almost evil with the layered baritone vocals and kind of ominous intro (in a good way). Rather than performing the song parodies that made his name, the evening was devoted to rocking out with Yankovic’s original songs. Ellen also takes some lead vocals on that record, and her voice became more important than ever.Īnd I have to ask about your Christmas album, “Jingle All the Way.” The songs seem to perfectly suit your voice.

I attribute it simply to the desire to experiment and to free up the way I normally sang. I think that all of our albums differ from each other significantly, but you’re right, the fourth record was something of a departure, especially vocally. What inspired the changes on this record? I know you were living in NY at the time, did that affect your approach to music in some way?
Speaking of your vocals, on the 1999 album, “Give Yourself a Hand,” you guys got a little more experimental with your sound, with you even singing in falsetto at times.
